Millions of people across the country are faced by all manner of challenges on a day to day basis. Among the most common ones include marital problems, financial difficulties, death of a loved one among other things. Being bombarded by all these problems all at once can be quite overwhelming, and, as a result, some people may end up falling into depression which could then lead to drug abuse.
Depression mixed with drug abuse is a self propagating engine. Basically, this is what happens: a person falls into depression for one reason or another. He or she then decides to seek solace and comfort by using a numbing agent i.e. an addictive drug. What usually starts as a seemingly innocent and occasional way of escaping reality soon turns into a life threatening dependence. As the person falls deeper into depression, the more drugs he or she uses to numb the feeling. Since both drug addiction and depression are disorders, such a person is said to be suffer from co-occurring disorders.
Depression is not the only disorder that can co-occur with drug addiction. There are many other mental ailments that can lead to drug addiction and vice versa, for example, anxiety, mania, multiple personality disorder, among others. In some cases, individuals may suffer from multiple mental disorders as well as drug dependence. As mentioned, this is a self-propagating engine which if ignored can cause dire consequences including death.
Mental disorders like depression and anxiety do not develop overnight. Usually, those affected are people who have struggled with personal difficulties for a significant period of time. Depression has been known to kill people because in this state the body’s immunity is significantly suppressed, the heart overworked and blood pressure increased. Depression can also harm other body organs like kidneys and the liver. Anxiety, on the other hand, can lead to hypertension and heart problems. Needless to say, these are very serious disorders and should, therefore, be dealt with as soon as they manifest.
It might be difficult for a person to cope with depression and anxiety all on their own. This is because to tackle these two disorders there needs to be a thorough objective assessment. The aim of this assessment is to determine what exactly caused the individual in question to fall into depression or suffer from anxiety in the first place. The best way forward when faced with depression, extreme anxiety and drug addiction is to seek professional help.
There are many mental health treatment centers around the country where thousands of people receive treatment for various disorders, year in year out. Some centers offer treatment for mental ailments while others for drug addiction. There are also dual diagnosis centers where treatment for both disorders is offered under one roof.
The first step to getting better is acceptance. The affected person has to come to the realization that they have a problem and, therefore, need help. It is always recommended that family and friends play a role in helping the person come to this realization and more so where drug addiction is involved.
