A Calm Sanctuary

Life is hectic, especially in this digital age, when we and our gadgets never switch off, and often we feel guilty to admit that we are human and we need to have some downtime. This shouldn’t be the case, as a stressed person is not only an unhappy person thereby losing their natural creativity and productivity, but a high amount of stress can lead to health problems.

the forgotten power of meditationInsomnia, loss of appetite leading to weight loss, depression and panic attacks are some of the most common side effects of stress on our physiological and psychological well being, while chronic stress can raise one’s blood pressure, and increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

If stress reaches a very high level, then it is best to consult with a doctor to prevent any more damage to the body. However, if you recognize symptoms such as frequent headaches, fatigue, little appetite, pains in your back, and a general feeling of anxiety and unease, you may well be suffering from stress. If caught in its early stages, stress can be countered by creating a calm and relaxing environment. Taking time to unwind and relax is the most important thing in countering stress. This doesn’t have to mean sitting in a quiet room, although it doesn’t not have to mean this either.

Having something different to do or think about, other than what is causing your stress can also calm you. A project or hobby are great ways to counter stress, as is having a calm retreat in which you can gather your thoughts and take the time to accept your limitations and establish your strengths.

You can create such a retreat yourself, which gives you a great project to counter stress, a goal to head towards giving you a satisfied feeling of accomplishment once the project is complete, and a sanctuary to retreat to in the future. Your own garden shed can be transformed into a calm sanctuary. After a good clear out, you can turn the shed into a comfortable retreat including a fireplace, and a nest of blankets and pillows, it can become a romantic retreat for two or an isolated area in which creative projects can be completed. A crafts room or a study or an area of meditation and reflection are all possibilities you can consider.

The most important aspect to remember when creating your own calm sanctuary is to make it entirely personal. What you choose to turn it into, must be your choice and your choice alone, the hobby should be something you enjoy and which gives you a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment, and you must want to enter your sanctuary instead of viewing it as a further chore or the next item on your to-do list.
